A dress that once moved through rooms of power, given new life as sculptural wings. Nine pearls added in the making — a deliberate choice, a new detail in a new life. Repurposed luxury at its most deliberate: shedding the garment, keeping the soul of it, creating something that soars.

Gaia's Wings

When TEDx asked for a site-specific artwork to fill the five-storey foyer of the ArtScience Museum, I thought about the big questions I'd been exploring at Oxford the week before. At the Oxford Futures Forum, we were considering long-range scenarios, climate change, and the role of the arts.

I bought this suit for a meeting with a CFO. It resulted in a quarter-million in business for me and several billion for them. The suit became art. The deal became a story about transformation.

The first set I created
The original orange organza wings. Six metres across. They balance perfectly. They remind me to dream big and create.
The process
How wings
are created
Every commission begins with you — where you are now, where you wish to go. Wings have been created for private residences, corporate interiors, public spaces, and hotel lobbies.
For inspiration pieces, I begin with pre-loved luxury garments. I use repurposed materials to give them new life. The transformation from forgotten to glory returned takes me back to the moment I realised I'd once had wings and forgotten them.
I take a piece — a silk dress, a suit, a length of fabric — and sit with it in my studio. I get a sense of what it can become.
Then comes the engineering. Every piece is handmade — I design the underlying structure, hand-select and test materials. What sort of flow do they need? Where shall the balance be? Do they need to be translucent? Where is strength required?
Each set of wings balances on a single point. The wings must float. They must flow. They must hold.
And then, together, we explore your wings.
